Zambia Launches $245 Million, 200 MW Solar Project to Boost Clean Energy
Zambia Breaks Ground on 200 MW Solar Plant in Mumbwa to Reduce Hydropower Dependence
Zambia has taken a major step toward energy diversification with the groundbreaking of a US$245 million, 200-megawatt solar power plant in Chief Moono’s Chiefdom, Mumbwa District.
The ceremony was officiated by Minister of Energy, Honourable Makozo Chikote, MP, who described the project as a milestone in Zambia’s transition toward renewable energy and reduced reliance on hydropower.
Minister Chikote highlighted that several renewable and thermal energy projects currently under construction are expected to come online soon, easing electricity shortages for households and businesses.
He thanked traditional leaders for providing land to investors, emphasizing that such partnerships drive critical infrastructure that benefits both present and future generations.
Project Overview and Investment
The Mega Solar Plant, led by ZAHU Energy Solutions Limited (ZESL), is a joint venture between Zambian and Hungarian investors, reflecting growing international confidence in Zambia’s energy reforms.
The project will include a five-kilometre transmission line connecting the plant to ZESCO’s Nambala Substation and incorporate battery storage technology to enhance supply reliability.
Construction is expected to take 18 months and will create over 200 direct jobs, along with business opportunities for local suppliers.
The project will also implement environmental and sustainability measures and support community development initiatives, including improved access to clean water and support for nearby schools.
Government and Community Support
ZESCO Acting Managing Director, Eng. Wesley Lwiindi, noted that the 236-hectare project will help stabilize the national grid and reduce dependence on hydropower, while also promoting skills development and boosting the local economy.
Central Province Minister, Honourable Mwabashike Nkulukusa, assured investors of the project’s security and long-term benefits, encouraging further investment in the province.
Mumbwa MP and Southern Province Minister, Honourable Credo Nanjuwa, praised the initiative as a milestone for both the district and the nation, recognizing traditional leaders and the government for creating an investment-friendly environment that generates employment and social benefits in rural communities.
A Strategic Step Toward Vision 2030
The solar project aligns with Zambia’s Vision 2030, demonstrating the government’s commitment to matching policy vision with concrete action.
Project financiers described the initiative as a symbol of strengthened cooperation between Zambia and Hungary, highlighting the country’s growing role in sustainable energy development in Africa.
